Special Notes/Funding
The Northern Neck Free Health Clinic, with 22 employees and more than 400 active volunteers, provides medical, dental and pharmaceutical care to low-income and uninsured or underinsured residents in a five-county service area. In 2010 the Clinic provided $7 million in services ? or $1 million more than a year earlier ? while medical visits increased by 680. Our patients have part-time or seasonal jobs, may have recently suffered a financial disaster or become unemployed, and may be handicapped or disabled and waiting for government benefits. They have incomes of 200% or less of the federal poverty level, and do not have Medicare, Medicaid or health insurance coverage. Most suffer from one or more chronic conditions, primarily diabetes, hypertension, asthma, hyperlipidemia, and obesity. The Medical Clinic operates five days and two evenings per week, including on-site mental health counseling on Tuesdays and Thursdays and podiatry services on Fridays. The Dental Clinic is open three to four days per week, with a staff and volunteer dentists working with final-year students from the VCU School of Dentistry. Medicines for Medical Clinic and Dental Clinic patients are dispensed through an on-site pharmacy. An Outreach Clinic is held every other Thursday in Westmoreland County, and an Outreach Office is open each Tuesday in Middlesex County.
